This has been a long time coming. A recent a recent story in the Independent discussed the increased interest of designers in trainers (or gym shoes, kicks…whatever you prefer to call ‘em).

To this I say: it’s about freaking time!

Yamamoto and McQueen jumped on this bandwagon a long time ago, understanding that the activewear market was an untapped source thirsty for style and most importantly, substance. Perfume and denim have long provided a finacial cushion for many designers, but this trend is a bit different, the above crossovers were geared toward women and men. Many high-end brands have geared their kicks towards men, leaving women to their Nikes and New Balances. This has trickle-up theory all over it (think: artists such as M.I.A, Santogold and the re-evolution of 80s hipster chic).

I’ve seen close friends and family spend their last pennies on fragrance and a pair of kicks. I mean JESUS, if Michael Jordan could tap into the wallets of the wealthy and underpriviledged kids and sway them to buy a pair of Air Jordans, then hell, this is merely reinventing the wheel.

Shout out to the Air Jordan I (above).

Acne’s Uniform Silk jumper is the objet’d affection in Lykke Li’s newest video for single “Possibility.” The single was written for the previous Twilight movie and while I personally haven’t been cool or tolerant enough to get swept aboard the cultural cancer car that is Twilight, the single is a winner. Love this chick.

I Love this. I think I get a Wonderwoman vibe because of the highwaisted hotpants situation going on. Not to mention she looks like she could beat the crap out of you.

But in a very feminine, nice way.

So upon doing a little research about Jeremy Laing, I stumbled on these beautiful renderings from talented illustrator Danielle Meder. How great are they?

The actual collection was quite nice. Word is he used sustainably hunted furs, which let’s face it, most of us have no TECHNICAL idea as to what the hell that means. Regardless it’s surely a step in the right direction; any designer incorporating a more eco/social effort is fine by me.  Romney Leader of style.com noted how savvy Laing was for stepping away from the more architectural silhouettes of the past. Ehh. I wouldn’t go that far. While the collection did feature some softer silhouettes, it still featured those blunt signature Laing lines. What was interesting was the fact that the designer’s Autumn ’08 collection featured a similar palette. A solid collection nonetheless.

Ever since it was announced that Kate Moss will be the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, I’ve heard several people speak ill of this decision and I’m officially peeved. Those refusing to acknowledge Kate Moss’ importance in the fashion industry, are cuckoo. Time and time again, I’ve argued with fashion insiders and outsiders, who just fail to understand. Often, their opinions are rooted in reasons that barely scathe the surface:

-“She’s a horrible mother!” says one, in connection to Moss’ annus horribilis that was 2005 (remember the drug charges?)

-“She’s a poor role model for young girls” says another, referring to her waif waistline and past eating disorder theories.

-“She doesn’t look like a model.” Well, thank heavens for that.

I’m not asking you to bow down and worship my personal fashion diety. After all she embodies all that we deem imperfect in both fashion and real life: gapped teeth, rail thin, that obnoxious Croydon accent (Naomi was a far better sounding Brit), a pair of eyes that look in two different directions…

Yet through all of this, Moss has had by far one of the longest most stable careers of any supermodel. Period. Pete Dougherty dramas aside, her only lingering controversies consisted of her as a model. Simple and plain. No cell phone throwing episodes. No diva tendencies. No movie deals. No pop star aspirations. Just an individual with an eagle eye focus and a work ethic that could battle that of the Kaiser’s (Karl Lagerfeld). While she has toiled in other industries, she’s never strayed far.

I distinctly remember witnessing the heroin chic adds for Calvin Klein and the controversy surrounding the adds escaped me completely. I was kid and vividly remember feeling relieved that there was a gap-toothed, flat chested girl who was painfully awkward and—gasp!–the same height as me. I didn’t care that she was white and British. And although I loved the voluptuous beauty of Naomi and Tyra, my gangly limbs and training bra self found a kindred spirit in Moss. So whether or not you agree with Kate the Great being a role model, acknowledging her influence and contributions should not, by any means, be questioned.

RIP Alexander McQueen. There are truly no words to describe how sorely we’ll miss your spirit and artistic brawn. Not many designers can truly say they were artists. You inspired legions.

Can’t we all just get along? Twitter wars (i.e. back and forth cheap shots on Twitter) are getting old. This was never cute. And as much as I LOVE Susie Bubble, her cheap shot at Daniel Saynt for improper useage of a possessive apostrophe was well…cheap and kind of stupid (for lack of a better word). I mean he did call her ‘last season’s flavour’ but it’s fashion: EVERYTHING LAST SEASON IS NO LONGER THIS SEASON’S ‘FLAVOR’. Sheesh. Isn’t this fact the beauty of it all? What made it so funny was Susie’s cheap grammatical shot at Saynt actually brought more attention to her own grammatical shortcomings. But hell, New York Times can’t even get it right all of the time. Susie, why oh why did you even give Saynt the pleasure of commenting?! (see that useage of a question mark AND exclamation point? Mrs. Nelson, my junior high English teacher would flip).
