A Little Obsessed…

October 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

With Dion Lee (and the crazy beautiful roster of antipodean designers tearing it up down under).

There’s something so refreshing about his shapes and stripped color scheme. Even in a collection of soft ethereal photos, you can still see the amount of detail in each piece. I think this sleeve really did it for me:

Sydney’s it girl (and doyenne of PR), Holly Garber, clad in Lee (above). What makes this image so great is the fact that the clothes still look amazing in “real time”. Granted she is a PR chick and is more modely than real folk, nevertheless it’s an impromptu photo and the jacket looks killer.

Complex Geometries ScreenShot; My absolute favorite.

Complex Geometries ScreenShot; My absolute favorite.

It seems that film is definitely becoming a more acceptable medium for many designers to share their visions with the masses. From Alexander McQueen teaming up with ShowStudio for a theatrical live show, to Diane Pernet’s A Shaded View on Fashion Film festival, la cinema is here to stay. But for those itching to know where the fashion film tide is headed check out the Business of Fashion’s top 10 picks for films in 2009.

1. Alexander McQueen 2. Guy Bourdin 3. Gareth Pugh 4. Richard Nicoll 5. Vanessa Bruno 6. David David (David Saunders) 7. A Shaded View on Fashion Film trailer 8. Complex Geometries 9. Tim Hamilton 10. E. Tautz

Check out a few of my fave’s below.

A Stranger in Paris.

Wowee wow, wow...you could fit an ocean between those two.

Wowee wow, wow...you could fit an ocean between those two.

My initial shock after reading a headline stating that Lindsay Lohan would now sit as artistic director at Emanuel Ungaro, was typical. In fact too typical. So much so that I felt it unnecessary to explore the unanimous “WTF” moment heard ’round the world, here.

Now, the gasps have resurfaced after the brand’s recent show in Paris and I can’t deny myself the thought that CEO Mounir Moufarrige’s decision to sweep her aboard Ungaro’s slow moving train, really was the brands last ace in the hole. The Parisian house took on a barely B list American actress and dolled her up with a chic title. The world knows this. Moufarrige and the rest of Ungaro knows this. But does Lohan? Does she know she’s being used as a mule?

Does anyone remember flick Maria Full of Grace?

Lohan was sent into the unknown to deliver the goods to a pack of “wear”wolves. She arrived in Paris laden in Paparazzi. Editors, buyers and thensome expected to see a spectacle and boy did they: heart-shaped pasties. pardon bejeweled heart-shaped pasties, ill-fitted jackets…it was dated over-eager attempt.

Moufarrige held the sword while Lohan gave her head up on a silver platter.

The fact is, Lohan could’ve easily hooked up with another younger, more independent brand and made sweet music. Ungaro could’ve nabbed a more worthy starlet and we could’ve lived happily ever after. The end. But they didn’t and she didn’t. What we were left with is a spectacle worthy of conversation, a record number of “I TOLD YOU SOs”, and a collection worthy of “75%” stickers come mid spring.

My condolences to the very talented Estrella Archs.

je suis très désolé.

Sessilee, Jourdan and Baby.

TwitPic from Sessilee Lopez

Check out Dunn's baby bump.

So those that know me best understand how big of a Jourdan Dunn fan I am (I mean geez, she does appear in the image at the top of this page…mind you this was B.T.M. -before top model status). Thanks to Ms. Sessilee Lopez’s twitpic we can now see how far along Ms. Dunn is in her pregnancy (roughly 7 months according to a few sources). Argh, does anyone else get annoyed at the fact that so many young gals are still getting knocked up without a wedding ring? Specifically the young gals with big careers ahead of them. It’s so commonplace these days. Oy…maybe I’m just too old fashioned….Anyway it’s an adorable pic. On the upside Dunn has commented on the jolt of self esteem she’s found due to being pregnant and we all prefer confident models.

The Bold, Beautiful Benz.

Chris Benz RTWSp10

So the verdict has long been in about the best and less impressive shows from New York fashion week, and as much as I’d love to wax poetic and review the shows like I have in the past, I won’t. A critical review of a catwalk show is reserved for those who’ve actually attended the shows. Too many blogs post reviews based on images from Style.com and lets just say, like Vogue, Style images are photoshopped beyond recognition, too often. Critical reviews based from photos are also just not fair to designers…

However I’d to pause and give praise to Chris Benz. I have a feeling that these images didn’t need to doctored up. The colors, the fabrics, the feeling were just so on point for spring ‘10. I keep trying to get the images out of my head but I can’t. Personally speaking I epitomize a cynical city girl. I wear black, I wear leather and I wear a lot of each. The fact that this collection–filled with it’s gumball machine hues and adolescent innocence–made me want to cross over to the light side for spring, says a lot. While the idea of incorporating light colors into spring wardrobes is beyond UNSHOCKING, the collection hit a soft, warm cuddly spot.

Anne-Sofie, me oh my.

August 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

No, no, you silly, silly goose I’m not talking about designer Ann-Sofie Back. There’s another Anne (with an”e”) on the catwalk: .

The Danish Design School student, debuted a few pieces during the recent…These pieces are so beautiful and so well thought out. The word fluid bounces around in my head every time I take a gander. I mean really folks… To see a designer with hands nimble enough to create such beautiful work — without the support of an entire staff chained to cutting tables– is pretty freaking awesome.

…so good I gotta post it twice (illustrations below)

Glossies, glossies everywhere…

August 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

…with lots of pages spare.

Oh September, the most celebrated month for fashion magazines. Where editors wave a trident over seas of hungry fashion-conscious consumers, commanding their attention with every turn of a page. Not anymore. Emily Steel for the WSJ recently covered what could be called the “state of the magazine” today. Very good read. Not to mention it couldn’t be timelier as we all sit anticipated for the debut of flick the September issue here in the States. The media world is in a long overdue frenzy, forcing an old medium to FINALLY DO A NEW TRICK. Advertisers have gotten more savvy (and thrifty with spending) and so have readers. I mean really when was the last time you picked up a vogue? I admit I did purchase the one with Beyonce on the cover this summer (guilty pleasure) but I never read it. It’s been sitting on my nightstand and now has big rings around it from me sitting cups of tea on her face.

Anyhoo…
Although many have been citing the recession as a starting point for the demise of fashion mags, I think that’s a bit overboard. While it’s agreeable that anything will die if it refuses to adapt to its enviro, there are many, many mags that learned early on to use their own formula. Vanity publishing. All of those beautiful magazines that you thumb through, filled with beautiful images, a few candid editorials and say ONE advertisement out of 150 pages (i.e. Lula) I salute you.
